Spring Turkey Hunting

There is a lot of tricks you should use for spring turkey hunting here are some that I found that have help me.

Before You Start Hunting

First thing is to do some scouting for the turkeys a good place is to find out where they are roosting. You don’t want to set up to close stay of the trail they use when they come out of the trees. Usually you will find them roosting in the biggest tree on your property. Turkeys very rarely like to fly so you want to stay away from a creek or a fence they have to fly over. Try to stay on the same side that they travel. If you have gravel on your property they will go to this. They will eat the gravel to help them digest the food they eat. And don’t forget about there feeding grounds stay close to those if you can’t find their roost.

DECOYS

Decoys are a very good thing to use I would not go hunting without them. The turkeys will come to the decoys when you are calling them, but be careful they will tear up your decoys if they can. I will use a 2 hens and a jake. I feel this is a must when turkey hunting. There is all different types of decoys find the one that suits you.

TURKEY CALLS

When you are calling turkeys I will start with a assemble call first thing in the morning. When they come out of the roost this seems to work great. I start of will a loud call and as they get closer, I do a softer call and less frequent. They are many calls on the market try to get one that sounds good to you. There is a lot of calls turkeys use when they are out in the woods. This is one thing you will have to learn. There is a electronic call you can use to mimic the calls. I use a mouth call and I always have a back up call, called the pump but other people like different things you just have to find what is right for you.

BLINDS

I have been out in the field many times and have been caught moving.
One of the things I learn was to make myself a blind all around me.
Turkeys have the best eyesight and they will catch any movement.
Turkeys many times if they catch you moving they will walk around you in a big circle, so watch your back.
There are many blinds on the market you can buy, me I use natural stuff that is around me. Try to set up your blind a few days ahead of your hunt so that the turkeys will get use to it.
